Background

For the last decade, hardware providers like Google and IBM have been investing millions into the development of scalable quantum computers. Alongside with the development of the hardware, companies like Siemens, Bosch, and BASF are looking into the potential of applying quantum computing to their own fields and optimization problems.

In the context of a recently started research project, our institute is collaborating with voestalpine Stahl GmbH on identifying and assessing potential use cases for quantum computing.

Goal

Understand the needs and processes of the industry partner, select a problem that is likely to be improved using existing quantum algorithms, and develop a proof of concept solution in close contact with the industry partner.

Tasks

  • Research existing literature on quantum algorithms and optimization techniques.
  • Identify potential use cases for quantum technology together with the industry partner.
  • Select one of these use cases and build a proof of concept solution using quantum computing.
  • Document your process, considerations, and potential limitations in the form of a master thesis.

Requirements

  • Interest in new technologies and their application.
  • A basic understanding of optimization problems and production planning.
  • Previous experience in quantum computing is helpful but not required. Willingness to learn is a must.
  • Solid Python programming skills.
