Dr. Stefan Klikovits co-organized a prestigious Shonan Meeting in Japan, bringing together global experts to tackle the growing complexity of modern systems engineering. Prof. Wimmer was among the participants and contributed his expertise.
From March 10–14, 2025, the prestigious NII Shonan Meeting series hosted an international seminar on Using multi-* modelling to manage complexity in systems engineering. Organized by Dr. Stefan Klikovits (Institute for Software Systems Engineering, JKU Linz), the meeting brought together over 25 world-renowned researchers from academia and industry to the serene Shonan Village Center in Japan with view of Mt. Fuji. Among the distinguished participants was also Prof. Manuel Wimmer, contributing JKU’s expertise to this high-level discourse.
Shonan Meetings, often described as the “Dagstuhl of the East,” are known for their exclusive, invitation-only format and their focus on shaping future research directions. The topic of this year’s seminar could not have been more timely: as modern engineered systems—from autonomous vehicles to smart infrastructure—grow increasingly complex, the need for unified, formal modelling approaches becomes critical. The seminar featured six tutorial-style talks by leading experts, followed by collaborative discussions exploring multi-view, multi-abstraction, and multi-paradigm approaches to systems modelling. JKU Win-SE’s active role in organizing and contributing to this event highlights the institute’s international standing in software and systems engineering research.
