Marco Stadler is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Business Informatics – Software Engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Informatics with a focus on IT Security and Internet Business from the University of Regensburg. At the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Marco earned a Master of Science in Business Informatics with a specialization in Software Engineering, Networks, and Security.
His research designs self-adaptive systems that keep cyber-physical systems secure, reliable, and sustainable at runtime. Drawing on edge computing, runtime monitoring, and adjustable security modes, he builds systems that adapt to changing conditions – for example, a safety-critical device such as a pacemaker can shut down non-essential features when it comes under attack, so it can devote its resources to the core functions that keep the patient safe and secure, an approach that saves energy along the way. These questions open up a range of directions for students seeking an engaging final thesis topic at the intersection of security, self-adaptation, and sustainability.
Beyond research, the institute is always happy to have students help with teaching as tutors – anyone curious is warmly welcome to reach out to me to learn more. In addition to his academic pursuits, Marco worked as a frontend developer for a design and communication agency near Munich and as a software developer in the IT finance industry. Marco spends his free time playing tennis, running, road cycling, and cooking homemade pasta dishes.
